Wedding Vows Tips

One of my favorite parts of weddings is when couples deliver the vows they’ve written to each other - it’s always so sweet and emotional! It can also seem daunting, so let’s talk about some tips for writing your vows, from a professional Charlotte wedding planner.

Tip #1: Keep it Personal, Short, and Sweet

Vows should feel personal, not like you typed “write my wedding vows” into ChatGPT (although AI can help you make them flow better). Talk about highlights of your love story, share your feelings about your partner, and talk about why you’re excited to marry them. Aim for 1-2 minutes and avoid anything negative - relationships are challenging but that doesn’t need to be featured in your wedding vows.

Tip #2: Have Tissues on Hand

If you or your partner are criers, have tissues available for you. Guys can have them in their suit jackets and ladies can tuck them into their bouquets; bonus tip - use a Q-tip to dab your tears so you don’t smear your makeup.

Tip #3: Write Them Down

Just like with wedding toasts that we covered recently, type and print or write your vows on paper. You don’t want the sweetest moment of the day to look like you’re checking your Instagram. Bonus - get cute vow books like these and they can be included in your details shots!

Tip #4: Pick a Designated Holder

If you’re sharing your vows during the ceremony in front of your guests, pick someone to carry your written vows up to the altar. This could be the best man or groomsman (carrying them in their suit jackets), the officiant, or someone else you trust.

Tip #5: Make Promises

Vows are by definition promises that you are making. Some couples will tell beautiful stories or express their deep love for one another, but forget the most important part - you are supposed to promise each other things when you get married. Make sure you talk about what you vow to do or promises you are making as part of your vows.

As a Charlotte wedding planner, I’ve seen couples struggle when it came time to write and deliver their vows. Hopefully this blog post has given you some great ideas!
