Wedding Dress Codes
One of the decisions you have to make when planning your wedding is what the vibe is going to be, and part of that is the dress code for guests. From black tie to casual, here are some popular dress code options that I see frequently, examples of what guests can wear (perfect to put on your wedding website!), and some considerations when choosing the dress code.
Dress Code Option 1: Black Tie
Best for upscale venues at night time.
Some popular black tie attire options:
Dresses: Floor-length gowns in luxurious fabrics like silk, satin, or chiffon. Darker hues are perfect for winter, while jewel tones and pastels shine in summer and spring.
Pant or Jumpsuits: Chic pant suits or tailored jumpsuits in classic colors for a modern twist.
Tuxedo: Classic black tuxedo, crisp white shirt, black bow tie, and polished dress shoes.
Summer: Lighter fabrics, sleeveless or off-shoulder styles, lighter wool/summer blends.
Winter: Velvet, long sleeves, and dramatic accessories.
Spring/Fall: Soft florals, layered options for unpredictable temperatures.
Dress Code Option 2: Formal or Black Tie Optional
Best for upscale venues during the day, or nice venues at night.
Some popular formal attire options:
Dresses: Floor-length dresses or elegant midi dresses. Similar to Black Tie, darker hues are perfect for winter, while jewel tones and pastels shine in summer and spring.
Pant or Jumpsuits: Chic pant suits or tailored jumpsuits.
Suit: Black suit, crisp white shirt, tie, and dress shoes.
Summer: Lighter fabrics, sleeveless or off-shoulder styles, lighter wool/summer blends.
Winter: Velvet, wraps, or heavier fabrics.
Spring/Fall: Soft florals, layered options for unpredictable temperatures.
Dress Code Option 3: Semi-Formal or Cocktail
Best for nice venues during the day, or in a low-key venue at night.
Some popular cocktail attire options:
Dresses: Knee-length or midi dresses, A-line, fit-and-flare, or wrap styles.
Pant or Jumpsuits: Tailored pant suits, rompers with sophisticated details, or jumpsuits in solid colors or subtle patterns.
Suit: Dark blue, grey, or black suit with dress shirts and optional tie, or sports jacket, dress shirt, and tie.
Summer: Light, airy fabrics; bold prints.
Winter: Jewel tones, elegant layering pieces.
Spring/Fall: Pastels or muted tones; scarves or light jackets for cooler evenings.
Dress Code Option 4: Casual
Best for low-key venues or backyard or beach weddings.
Some popular casual attire options:
Dresses: Sundresses, maxi dresses, or playful midi options.
Pant or Jumpsuits: Linen pants with a stylish top, rompers, or casual jumpsuits.
Suit: Lightweight suits, chinos with button-down shirts, no tie, loafers.
Summer: Flowy dresses, sandals, lighter fabrics.
Winter: Heavier fabrics and closed-toe shoes.
Spring/Fall: Layer with lightweight jackets or cardigans.
Considerations When Choosing a Guest Dress Code
Venue Type
Ballroom weddings lean formal; vineyard or beach ceremonies allow more relaxed attire.
Terrain
Avoid stilettos on sand or grass. Wedges, block heels, or stylish flats are safer options.
Weather & Season
Check the forecast: lightweight fabrics for heat, layers for cooler climates.
Food & Drink
Buffet-style dinners favor more casual dress codes, while stations and plated elevate the dress code.
Choosing a dress code can seem daunting, but this is another thing your wedding planner can help you decide based on the choices you make and vision you have.
