Planning a wedding is full of decisions - some small, some monumental. It’s easy to get caught up in trying to do everything, but the truth is, not every detail deserves the same budget. As a wedding planner in Charlotte, NC, I encourage couples to focus on the things that truly matter while cutting back on what won’t impact their day or memories. Here’s a guide to what to splurge on and what you can skip so your wedding feels intentional, personal, and stress-free.

Side note: If the things on my “skip” list are important to you, go for it! These are just typically the things I see couples skipping so they can spend their budget on things that matter more to them.

Splurge On…

Photography & Videography

Your wedding day will pass in a blur, but your photos and films last forever. This is one area where investing extra makes a big difference. Professional photographers and videographers capture the emotions, candid moments, and details you’ll want to relive for a lifetime.

The Venue

The venue sets the tone for your entire day. Choosing a space that matches your vision, flows well, and supports your guest experience is always worth the investment. Beautiful architecture, lighting, and a functional layout will enhance everything from ceremony to reception.

Guest Experience

From cocktails to dinner to lounge areas, your guests’ experience is key. Investing in thoughtful touches - a signature menu, cozy seating, or interactive elements - ensures everyone enjoys the day and feels appreciated.

Music & Entertainment

Music shapes the energy of your day. A talented DJ or live band keeps the party alive, ensures smooth transitions, and keeps your guests engaged. Cutting corners here can impact the overall vibe of your celebration.

Personal Touches

Skip On…

Copious Amounts of DIY Décor

DIY decor is time consuming to put together and set up/clean up on the day of. Too much decor and your wedding could look cluttered instead of timeless. Instead, focus on key statement pieces or personalized touches that make your celebration feel cohesive and intentional.

Overly Elaborate Stationery

While invitations are important, you don’t need to over-invest in expensive paper goods. Simple, high-quality designs often feel more timeless and elegant than lavish suites that won’t be noticed after the day. Still want beautiful stationery for flat lays and/or VIP guests? Create a smaller amount - you get the vibe you’re looking for without breaking the budget.

Favors That Don’t Serve a Purpose

Guests appreciate thoughtful gifts. If a favor is cute but impractical or forgettable, it’s okay to skip it. Consider edible, useful, or personal favors that guests will actually enjoy, or skip favors altogether!

Unnecessary Signage

Signs You Actually Need

Certain signs help guests navigate the day and understand your wedding’s unique elements. Include directional signage if the flow from one area to another isn’t obvious. A seating chart and table numbers are essential to guide guests to their seats efficiently. For special elements, such as a Bible guestbook, Polaroid photo book, or an audio guestbook, include small explanation signs so guests understand how to participate.

Signs You Don’t Need

Some traditional or decorative signs are optional and often go unused. For example, a welcome sign or signage for standard elements like a card box or a traditional guestbook may not be necessary. If you’re planning an unplugged ceremony, a sign may not be required either - instead have your officiant make an announcement.
